Various – Volition Cuts Vol. 1 (EP)
$25.00 Inc GST
Honouring trailblazing Australian imprint Volition Records with a sharp selection from a label that hardwired club culture into the mainstream. Emerging from Andrew Penhallow’s time at GAP Records, which imported UK post-punk and proto-electronics, Volition pivoted to homegrown voices, fusing indie abrasion with dancefloor urgency.
The comp opens with Sisters Underground’s intergenerational anthem ‘In the Neighbourhood’, lifted from the Proud compilation and flipped into a hip-house dub by Robert Racic. Brisbane synth-pop unit Boxcar follow with a dose of ritual-laced industrial, retooled by Miami freestyle maverick Tony Garcia. Sexing The Cherry weigh in with a bleep-addled meltdown from High — the first all-Australian dance compilation to top the ARIA charts. The set closes with Single Gun Theory’s ambient-pop reverie ‘Fall’, reimagined as full-throttle Goa trance by Stuart Crichton and Apollo 440’s Norman Fisher-Jones — a final charge that captures the label’s relentless forward motion.
