Listening to Blistersticks reminds me just how much the music I love comes from a clash of sensibilities, from people with similar levels of artistic courage but acutely different musical styles.
The collection is full of effortlessly flowing melodies, often paired with a lyric of bitter intensity and splashes of abrasive colour. Moments that jack up the tension then take it down come and go.
You’ll hear this yourself right from the start, but it’s the last track, ‘Enough’s Enough’, that threw the entire set into relief for me. As the album closes, I’m left with the same late-night questions that came to Arthur Gregory in his poem, ‘Wilderness Child’:
He cannot speak but like
an animal cries out. For what
he lost? found? For what he never had?
